On China - by Henry Kissinger

    art-353-on-china-200x0.jpg

In this summary you will learn

How China’s unique history shaped its political development
How the US and China reached a historic milestone to establish diplomatic ties
What the future holds for US-China relations

    Recommendation

In his formidable 500-page-plus book, equally formidable scholar-diplomat Henry Kissinger writes about the nation with which he is inextricably linked: China. Kissinger infuses his text with impressive personal recollections based on more than 50 visits to China over 40 years, working either officially as national security adviser and secretary of state, or unofficially as a foreign policy expert. In that time, he has seen China’s evolution through four generations of its leaders. His insights on foreign policy and his personal rapport with top officials enable him to embellish this diplomatic history with extraordinary detail and discernment. getAbstract highly recommends the book’s vast scope to anyone seriously interested in examining China’s current and future role in world politics and economics, and that should be just about everyone.

    About the Author

The Snowball - Warren Buffett and the Business of Life

    The-Snowball-Warren-Buffet-and-The-Business-of-Life-Alice-Schroeder.jpg

In this summary you will learn

    Who Warren Buffett is
What his personal and business history is
    What his investment philosophy is
How he became the world’s richest man

    Recommendation

Warren Buffett is “everyman” as multibillionaire. Despite his vast wealth, he has always eschewed ostentation. He pays himself about $100,000 annually, which in today’s U.S. economy places him in the upper-middle-class. He lives in the same simple Omaha, Nebraska, house that he bought in 1958 for $31,500. He prefers an old gray suit to expensive London tailoring. In Buffett’s early days, when he was only a multimillionaire and not a multibillionaire, he walked around with holes in the soles of his shoes. To Buffett, wardrobe doesn’t matter; what matters is making money. He is better at this pursuit than anyone else in the world. In 2008, Forbes magazine ranked him as the globe’s richest man, with a net worth of $62.3 billion. Author Alice Schroeder does a masterful job of chronicling Buffett’s improbable, inspiring life. As a former superstar research analyst, Schroeder uses her expert knowledge of finance and commerce to detail Buffett’s investment philosophy and business activities. getAbstract praises Schroeder’s remarkable skills as a researcher and writer. Her book is packed with fascinating details and trenchant observations about the “Oracle of Omaha.” One of the best business biographies available, this book shows how the world’s greatest investor amassed the world’s greatest fortune, while staying true to his essential self.

    About the Author

Alice Schroeder, initially a CPA, became a respected research analyst. Impressed with her writing skills, Warren Buffett recommended that she become a full-time writer instead.

Plan of Attack - by Bob Woodward

Why President Bush began planning war against Saddam Hussein immediately after Sept. 11
What strident political skirmishes took place within the Bush administration well before the first shot was fired against Iraq

    Recommendation

Veteran Washington reporter Bob Woodward continues to shine his lamp into the shadows of U.S. political life. Woodward has an uncanny ability to present a point of view without appearing biased, perhaps because he approaches truth with a complex worldview and eschews viewing individual leaders as either particularly good or evil. Although you may not want to hear what he learned, Woodward interviewed more than 75 officials directly involved in the war on terrorism, including spending three and a half hours with President Bush. He found out that Bush considered, and then planned, war in Iraq long before voters knew, and that his chief advisors debated it vigorously. Right or wrong, he seems to say, Bush’s pivotal team members - Cheney, Rumsfeld, Powell, Franks - were entirely earnest. getAbstract.com strongly recommends this book to anyone who wonders how the U.S. became the proud new owner of all of Iraq’s problems. It gives you a breathtaking behind-the-scenes understanding of the decisions, for good or ill, that led to America’s second war against Saddam.

    About the Author

Bob Woodward was key in exposing electoral wrongdoing in the Nixon Administration during the Watergate scandal, as reflected in his first book, All The President’s Men, written with colleague Carl Bernstein in 1974. He has been a reporter and editor at The Washington Post for 33 years. He wrote nine No. 1 best-selling nonfiction books, including Bush at War (2002), an account of the U.S. response to the attacks on September 11, 2001.

Title:Greece's 'Odious' Debt: The Looting of the Hellenic Republic by the Euro, the Political Elite and the Investment Community
    Author:Jason Manolopoulos
    Date2011-05-05
    Pages:304
    Language:
    Format: PDF
    Size:7.2 MB

Description:Jason Manolopoulos combines his experience of the global financial system, European politics and Greek society to demonstrate how one of the EU's smaller countries played a catalytic role in a crisis that threatens the future of the euro, and possibly even of the European Union itself. He explores the historical legacy and psychological biases that have shaped an on-going drama. While leaders of the European Union criticise the markets' for destabilizing the single currency, Manolopoulos interrogates the shared beliefs of the EU and the investment banking community - and how they colluded for a decade in the illusion that lending huge sums to peripheral eurozone countries was safe. Policy and investment errors bear marked similarities with earlier financial crises - in particular the Exchange Rate Mechanism system and the Argentine debt crisis. This inability to learn history's recent lessons begs fundamental questions of policy making, which this book discusses. Greek society also comes under scrutiny, as shocking details of a kleptocratic political class and a wasteful public sector are revealed. Manolopoulos traces these developments back to dictatorship and civil war, but argues that there is no excuse for their continuation in a modern democracy.
